All About Hair Loss: Basics That Cannot Be Ignored!

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On May - 31 - 2011

Hair is a fine thread or string of dead keratin cells that grow every where on human skin except for palm and base of human feet. There are about 150,000 hairs on a normal human scalp. Strings of hair are made up of a protein called keratin that is present in nails too. This protein is produced in hair follicle present on the surface of the skin. Anagen, Catgen and Telogen are 3 phases of life cycle of hair follicle- Anagen is the period of active hair growth and lasts between 2 to 6 years, Catagen is transitional period that lasts for 2 to 3 weeks and Telogen is the resting phase and this phase is responsible for shedding of older hairs and replacing by new.

Hair is very important part of human body and protects our body from dust and dirt. Hair loss is a serious problem and should not be taken for granted. If not prevented or treated it can lead to baldness. Hair loss or baldness can be hereditary problem, side effect of medicine, or result of improper diet. Stress is another major factor that causes hair loss. Men women or children any one can suffer from hair loss.

Medicinally hair loss is also known as Alopecia. According to specialists, there are three major types of alopecia:
1-Involutional alopecia: this type of Allopecia occurs with age as aged people’s hair under-go gradual thinning and ultimately fall.
2-Androgenic Allopecia: it is a genetic hair loss problem and can affect both the sexes. In men, symptoms are visible earlier then women. In males symptoms may even start as early as commencement of teenage and is called male pattern baldness. This condition is marked by disappearance of hair from crown. Symptoms in women are generally visible in late 40s and are called as female pattern baldness. Females experience extensive hair loss at crown region that slowly leads to baldness.
3-Apolecia Areata: it is the hair loss among children and young adults. Patchy hair loss slowly leads to baldness but in most of the cases hairs grow again within few years.

A proper healthy diet can prevent and treat hair loss up to some extent. Diet rich in silica minerals vitamins such as biotin para aminobenzoic acid follic acid are considered good for hair growth and preventing hair loss. Moreover keeping hairs clean and washing them properly after a good oil massage increases the blood circulation in head and prevents hair loss. Minimizing stress also helps reducing hair fall. A number of home made remedies are available today for prevention and treatment of hair loss that do not even cause side effects. Thus herbal hair loss treatments have been proven more efficient and cheaper. Medicines, drugs, surgical treatments also provide relief to the sufferers they are expensive but bring faster and quick results Hair transplantation is one of the surgical treatments to treat hair loss and involves the procedure of removing a narrow strip of hair bearing scalp and using it too fill the bald area.

Thus ignoring hair loss or letting it untreated will only increase this problem. Covering bald areas with hairstyles, or using makeup, or hats wigs etc are not a solution but, they make condition worse. Thus one must opt for proper medications or certified treatments to get rid of this problem.

Having Grey Hair? Know The Causes

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On May - 27 - 2011

As your age increases your hair starts losing its original color and turns grey. This is something normal but when your hair starts turning white prematurely then something is really wrong. This condition will take away all your charm and will make you look old even when you are just in your young age. The hair is adjunct of the skin. The cells which form the outer layer of the skin, hair are also formed of those same cells. Hair grows from hair glands which are deep settled in the epidermis. An oily substance called sebum is secreted by sebaceous glands which provide nourishment, shine and blackness to the hair. These benefits cannot be given to hair externally; this must come from the bloodstream. When the internal, natural process fail to provide hair all these kinds of nourishments then hair lose its color and turn white.

There are many causes which lead to such condition. The most common causes are when you fail to provide proper food to your hair that is when you do not take a proper diet. When there is a lack of Vitamin B, iron, copper and iodine in your daily diet then it results in grey hair. One should also not take too much of tensions and mental stress as it also adds tension in the scalp. This will restrict the supply of nutrition which is the vital need of the hair. Due to stress, people suffer from insomnia. One should never forget that sleep is very important for healthy body and if body remains fit so will the hair. When a person faces emotional instability even then colored hair may turn white as it exerts a negative influence on the hair thus reducing the production of melanin, important for the keeping hair black.

Hair can turn white also when you do not wash your hair on regular basis and your scalp is unclean for most of the times. Washing hair with hot water and applying hair dyes also adds to the damage. Use of such appliances which emits heat on your hair should also be prohibited. Those products which have high chemical content should also be avoided as they decrease the quantity of melanin and badly affects the papilla. Sometimes even heredity can be reason of your white hair. In some families if mother or father or any near relative has faced the problem of premature greying of hair then the next generations can also face the same problem.

When one remains unhealthy then greying of hair is one of the most common results of unhealthy body. Unhealthy blood cells, kidneys and bone marrow disorder affect the blood circulation in the body and poor blood circulation always results in grey hair. Skin disorders also add on to the cause. Heavy medication or long term medication always have side effects and one of the side effect is grey hair or hair loss. All of the above mentioned points should be kept in mind for fighting against grey hair.

How to Find the Right Shampoo for Your Hair

Posted by Kenny On May - 25 - 2011

Finding the right shampoo for your hair can be tricky. Most of us will just settle for the first thing we find that doesn't leave our hair looking dry and flat. But if you want to put a little more effort into the process you can probably find something that gives you more volume and life than you thought possible.

A popular question today is: what is the best over the counter shampoo? The answer with any shampoo is: it depends. That's because everyone's hair is different, and therefore will react differently to the types of shampoo we put in it. You are probably going to want to do some experimenting, trying different kinds of shampoo and comparing them to one another. You can cut this process a little bit shorter by investing in a salon visit at first. Ask their opinion on the shampoo you should use, buy a bottle of their stuff, and use this as a base. Get some over the counter shampoos and compare how they make your hair feel to how the salon shampoo makes your hair feel. Chances are the salon stuff is going to be great, and most of the other shampoos... not so much. But when you find that one that works as well, then you're set to go.

That's a good routine for regular hair, but what is the best shampoo for color treated hair? A good rule of thumb for colored hair is to avoid shampoos that have sulfites in them. This is a strong cleaning agent that is known to cause color to flake out of hair, making it fade away faster. You're actually going to have this problem with any cleaner to an extent, as the whole point of shampoo is to get oils and other substances out of the hair, but those are the worst. You should probably start this search at the salon again, and get some advice on what kinds of shampoo are gentlest on color.

Not all over the counter shampoos are bad, but there are definitely some bad ones in the group. By taking the time to find one that works for you, you will save yourself time and energy in the long run.

Oily Hair – Not a Problem

Posted by Kenny On May - 23 - 2011

Most of the times, people are bothered about too dry hair and scalp. However, a less known problem nowadays is of oily scalp and hair. When you wash your and in the morning and by evening they tend to look all limp and flat, it perhaps clearly explains that you have oily hair. Oily hair does not require as much care as dry hair. But if ignored, can be quite bothersome. Unlike dry hair, Oily hair is less susceptible to damages like split- ends and roughness; however, they can be quite difficult to manage. Oily hair and scalp give you a flat and greasy appearance. It can also be a good reason for sticky dandruff problem and fungal infections. Oil produced by the scalp is to protect the hair shaft so that the hair growth is proper and also to reduce the problem of hair breakage and hair fall. It also maintains the natural shine and softness of hair. Hence, oil secretion is very important. But when the scalp starts producing oil in an uncontrolled manner, it obviously becomes a problem.

There are various reasons that contribute to oily hair problem. It can be both hormonal as well personal care related careless attitude. Sometimes, when people use androgenic hormones their body tends to produce excessive oil. It can also be a hereditary or genetic problem. And not to forget, your diet is also a very important element. A diet partial to oily and heavy food can be a reason for the same. Therefore, it is important to keep some things in mind if you want to get rid of oily and greasy hair and instead have beautiful tresses that flow as smooth as a river. Washing your hair thoroughly in order to remove all the dirt is very important. Avoid using conditioners for some time. If it appears that the ends are dry and brittle, you can then use some on the ends.

You can probably use some acidic solution to rinse your hair so that it reduces the oil from your hair. One can be made by mixing some lemon juice and vinegar. Wash your hair with it after shampooing, every time. Alcohol beverage like beer can also be used for this purpose. Spray a mixture of cider vinegar and water on your hair and leave for 2-3 minutes, wash off with lukewarm water. This prevents shampoo buildup. Diluted tea is rich in tannic acid and act as a perfect astringent to reduce oil from your hair. You can also try making a good shampoo at home by mixing aloe Vera gel and some lime juice to your normally used shampoo. And you can also use it every day to wash your hair. Baby powder is again a good way to reduce the greasiness, if you do not have time and are in a real hurry. Just sprinkle some and comb off. Try on these easy tips and bring life back to your hair.

Premature Grey Hair – What a Mess

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On May - 20 - 2011

When one finds some white ugly looking hair in black shiny hair, that picture upsets one a lot. Having white hair with growing age is not an issue but the real issue is when black hair start turning grey prematurely. This can be because of many reasons such as not having a proper diet, taking lots of stress and tensions, keeping ill for a long period of time, being on heavy medicines, keeping hair and scalp unclean, use of appliances like blow dryers and heating rods and last but not the least the heredity you belong too. Even though greying of hair is an irreversible process, there are some home methods by which you can control the further damage and stimulate the process of growing new black hair on the scalp.

The most used and beneficial home remedy is the use of Indian gooseberry. It is a kind of hair tonic for enriching hair growth and hair coloration. The fruit is to be cut into pieces and should be completely dried leaving no water content in it. This process should not be taken place under the sun but preferably in shade.

Tale some coconut oil and boil these pieces with it. The dried substance will then become like charred dust. The oil thus produced is going to be very dark in color and this oil should be applied to hair. Another way in which amla can be used is by applying amla juice with almond oil and drops of lemon juice together every night. Massage your scalp properly as it will also stimulate blood flow.

Even amaranth works wonders in this problem. What you need is fresh juice of its leaves and its application directly to your hair. Your hair will start retaining their original color. It also keeps hair soft and smooth. You can even eat curry leaves as it is. This will provide strength to the hair roots. You can even make chutney from these leaves or squeeze some of its drops in buttermilk. By boiling the leaves in coconut oil new oil can also be formed which is very beneficial too.

Ribbed gourd could also be used as a remedy. Cut the pieces of this vegetable and then dry it in shade. Soak them in coconut oil and leave it as it is for four days. Boil the oil till it turns dark and leaves behind a thick residue. Apply the oil to hair and enrich the hair roots. One can even apply butter to hair for preventing grey hair. Just take the butter made from cow’s milk in small quantity and apply it to your scalp twice a week.

Vitamins are very important for guarding hair ageing premature greying so make sure you take sufficient of yogurt daily. Juices of carrot, lettuce and capsicum are also advantageous. Make sure your diet is healthy, balanced and proper. Avoid junk food and soft drinks as they will give you wrinkles, ugly looking skin and grey hair.

Hair Care Easy and Effective With Henna

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On May - 16 - 2011

Henna is a small shrub, also known as Lawsonia inermis, has small white and reddish flowers. It is found in various parts of the world like India, Pakistan, Somalia, Egypt, and Libya. Henna powder is deep green in color prepared from the leaves of the henna plant. Many believe that henna provides black color. However, Natural henna produces orange-red color. It is a natural product having various medicinal as well as healing properties. The medicinal properties of henna are used for ailments like ulcer, burns, itching etc. Very popularly it is also known for its use in hair growth treatments. Henna is also used for smoothing of skin and improving blood circulation in the body. Because of its anti-microbial and sedative properties, it is also greatly used in Ayurveda medicines.

Henna is generally used for dyeing purpose. It gives a reddish brown color to hair. Besides its coloring properties, henna is also good for hair growth and treating hair loss. It blends with the natural proteins in hair and thereby stimulating hair growth and also strengthening your hair. Henna hair oil can also be used daily for massaging your hair. Henna is not only a wonderful remedy for hair loss but also helps in maintaining healthy and beautiful hair. It helps in healing hair shaft by repairing and sealing the cuticle. It prevents hair breakage and also holds the shine intact. It prevents premature hair fall by maintaining pH balance of the scalp. It cures various scalp related problems like itching, dandruff, dry scalp etc. occurring due to pollution, and excessive use of hair dryer.

Henna is an excellent natural conditioner. Neutral henna (cassia obovata) is made of pure leaves of henna which is of a different quality. It does not provide any color to your hair. It is used entirely for conditioning purpose. Natural or herbal henna has nourishing properties and makes hair soft and shiny. It is generally applied by soaking it in water. Various herbs like basil, asparagus etc. can also be added to it in order to increase the nourishing effects. It is also mixed with curd and applied to the scalp. Curd has properties that prevent drying of hair and also provide additional shine to it. This mixture applied to the hair should be kept for at least 2-3 hours for proper results. Coloring also depends on the texture and type of hair. It is preferable not to shampoo hair just after washing off the henna, as it washes off maximum color as well. Rather it is appropriate to oil your hair first and then shampoo it.

Henna leaves can also be used to prepare henna oil which can be used regularly for oiling your hair. Henna oil is prepared by boiling henna leaves with coconut oil or mustard oil. Henna hair oil brings back the supply of essential nutrients in the scalp and hair which is depleted due to pollution and exposure to sunlight. For beautiful and healthy long hair it is advised to use henna in every 15-20 days.

Home Remedies for Premature Graying of Hair

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On April - 27 - 2011

More salt than pepper in your hair is a constant reminder that you are not young anymore. Graying of hair means fading of the natural color of your hair. This is pretty much of a phenomenon these days and age is no more a barrier for it. Not only adults and teenagers even the children, nowadays, are facing this problem. The root cause of graying of hair is the deficiency of oil gland production in the follicles of the scalp. This leads to lack of proper nutrients to hair resulting in graying. Diet plays a very crucial role in it. Graying of hair can also be a result of deficiency of minerals and vitamins like vitamin B12, copper, iron, iodine etc. It sometimes can also be a consequence of thyroid imbalance. It can also happen because of excessive stress and anxiety. Gray hair is probably difficult to color as it is more defiant to hair color or dye due to less melanin in it. Also, smokers are probably 4 times more prone to this problem. However, like every problem has a solution to it, we here give you some very impressive and easy home remedies to prevent premature graying of hair.

One of the best herbs to prevent graying of hair is curry leaves. It is thus advised to take them in your daily diet. Or you can also make oil out of them by boiling them with a particular quantity of coconut oil and then apply to your scalp. A paste of gourd with coconut oil is also a good method. Take 2-3 pieces of ribbed gourd and dry it in the sun. Then soak it in coconut oil. Boil it until the residue turns black. Finally it is cooled and used to massage the scalp. Massaging the scalp with butter made out of cow’s milk, twice a week, is another good way. Extract of fresh leaves of amaranth vegetable is applied on hair. It is proved to be helpful in retaining the natural color of your hair and also facilitates increased hair growth. You can also use Indian gooseberry fruit to treat this problem. A paste is prepared by drying and then soaking its pieces in coconut oil. Alternatively, you can also mix the juice of Indian gooseberry with equal amount of almond oil and apply this mixture on your scalp, keep it overnight and wash off in the morning. This is also a very effective remedy for premature graying.

As already discussed, your eating habits have a way much effect on your health as well as the health of your hair. Try avoiding refined products like refined flour and sugar and other foods like jams, pastries, packed drinks and juices with preservatives, too spicy food or too hot food, oily food and junk food etc. Eating fresh fruits and green leafy veggies is a good practice and helps avoiding premature graying of hair. One bowl of yogurt mixed with very little yeast before every meal also helps preventing the problem.

Another good practice includes oiling your hair and massaging scalp properly. Various kinds of essential oils have been used over centuries which not only contribute in the growth of long hair but also strengthen it and impart shine and luster. Nowadays, aroma therapists also use these oils for hair treatments. Some of the essential oils used are mentioned here. Coconut oil is the most ancient and useful kind of oil use for hair massage. Regular massage, on scalp, with coconut oil improves growth and prevents hair fall. Jojoba oil is also good for repairing damaged hair. Rosemary extract is good for promoting hair growth and best known for used in treatments for hair loss. It also has mild antiseptic properties. Olive oil is also considered very good for hair as it has vitamin- E that nourishes the hair follicle and hair shaft. Massaging your scalp gently with olive oil, before going to bed and shampoo hair the next morning is a good practice. It not only helps in increasing hair growth but also rejuvenates the scalp.

Peppermint oil, bay seed oil, grapefruit seed oil, lavender oil, chamomile essential oil and basil essential oil are some other essential oil known for their properties of hair growth and strengthening. Lavender oil has also been done some experiments regarding its effectiveness in hair re- growth. A group of volunteers was asked to massage their hair with lavender oil 3 times a week and similarly another group was asked to do it with almond oil. Results of increased hair growth were observed in the first group, massaging hair with lavender oil.  Lavender oil also has antibiotic properties and also strengthens your hair.

It is important to know that all essential oils are very strong and has heating effect so they should always be applied by diluting them with carrier oils. As it is your responsibility to be safe  and take precautions, it is good to take a patch test first. However rare are the chances, it is  still advised to consult a medical practitioner and aroma therapist as these essential oils may sometimes cause irritation and allergies.

Simple Solution to the Problem of Dry Hair

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On April - 12 - 2011

Hair grows out of minute cells, deep inside various layers of your scalp, called follicles. Hair is made up of a type of protein called keratin. Your hair is also an indicator of the overall health of your body. Hair can be classified as three types i.e. dry hair, normal hair and oily hair. After repeated wash also, dry hair continues to look dull and low. It happens when the oil glands are unable to produce enough serum to provide shine and strength to your hair. Dry hair is more fragile and is prone to split- ends formation. Thus dry hair needs a lot of care and nourishment. Your hair becomes oily when the glands secrete more oil. Oily hair needs to be washed every alternate day as they appear just fine after a wash but tends to become oily within 1-2 days.

Summer season is the toughest season for your hair to deal with. Excessive heat, continuous perspiration, atmospheric pollution, dirt and dust etc. all affect your hair very badly. It not only makes your hair rough and brittle also leads to pigmentation generation gradually resulting in graying of hair. Therefore, it is important to take proper care of your hair by not only external but internal means like adequate intake of vitamins and proper nutrition, balanced diet, lots of water, etc. as well. To start with, always apply a sunscreen conditioner to your hair before going out in the sun. You should always wear a scarf or a cap or hat to protect your hair from direct sunrays. Drinking a lot of water is very important as in summers you hair loose much water and can become dry. Avoid using heating equipments like dryers, straightened and rollers etc. You can also replace chemical shampoos for herbal shampoos and conditioners.

In winter seasons, there is less humidity in the atmosphere and thus you don not perspire much. This automatically prevents daily need for shampooing the hair. However, the cold breeze effects the hair in similar way as the scotching sun. Cold winter breeze also make your hair dry and rough. Massaging the hair properly, using essential oils like rosemary oil, olive oil jojoba oil etc is good for hair. Leave it overnight and wash off in the morning. Lastly comes the monsoon season. In this season, there is increase in the atmospheric humidity causing the hair oily and greasy. It looses its bounce giving a flat look. High levels of humidity cause excessive sweating, also leading to scalp problems like itching. Therefore, it is best to avoid use of chemicals and synthetic products for hair. Henna is perhaps a good natural conditioner and much helpful particularly in this season. You just need to take out little time out of your busy schedules to follow these simple suggestions to maintain the beauty of your gorgeous locks.
