African-American Hair Care Tips

Posted by Kenny On November - 7 - 2008

Black hair needs adequate moisture to maintain its health. The ability for hair to absorb moisture depends on how porous the hair is. Generally speaking, fine hair is usually more porous than coarse hair.

To see how porous or damaged your hair is, try this simple test. Take a small section of hair and tease it by back-combing it. If the hair bunches up very quickly it is either porous or damaged.

Here are some tips for blow-drying African-American hair. Keep in mind the particular needs of your specific hair when judging how much moisturizing treatment your hair needs.

Start off with a good moisturizing hair lotion, keep the heat on low, and keep the blow-dryer about 2 to 3 inches from the hair.

First use a large-toothed comb to detangle the hair. Start combing the ends first and work your way up to the scalp. This method will reduce damage and breakage.

Use a lightweight leave-in conditioner or anti-frizz serum to help protect against the heat. This will also help close the cuticle.

Gently towel-dry the hair real well to remove as much excess water as possible. Do not vigorously rub the hair with the towel but rather gently press the towel against the hair.

Dry the hair in sections using clips to section off the hair. Start at the bottom and work your way up to the top of the head.

Keep the blow-dryer moving across the hair and do not keep it directly pointed on one section of the hair for too long as this will help to keep the heat damage to a minimum.

Dry the hair in a downward motion as this will help the cuticle to lay flat and will help provide shine to the hair.

After drying a section of hair, use a blast of cold hair to close cuticle as this will help to seal in moisture.

Use a diffuser on the blow-dryer if you would prefer to keep your hair in its naturally curly state.

The very curly African-American hair has fewer cuticle layers than wavy or straight hair and this makes it more fragile and vulnerable to heat and chemical damage. Each time heat is applied to your fragile hair, some of the moisture is lost which affects the softness and manageability of the hair. It is important to reduce damage and moisture loss by considering the tips as mentioned above.

The Best African American Hair Care Products

Posted by Kenny On November - 7 - 2008

Because African American hair is prone to dryness and breakage, it is essential that you invest in some quality hair care products that were designed precisely for your hair.

Shea butter is an absolute must for African Americans. It is a great moisturizer for your hair, but did you know it works very well on your skin too? It is absorbed quickly into the skin and is best if it is applied twice a day. Oils By Nature makes a great shea butter and their products are made from natural and organic ingredients.

If your hair is chemically treated, you'll need to deep condition your hair at least once a month. I especially like Treasured Locks' Deep V Conditioner. It is scented with jojoba and vanilla and works wonderfully well especially when activated by heat.

If you have braids or dreadlocks, I recommend African Pride Braid Sheen spray with extra shine. This spray softens, shines and moisturizes your braids and can be used every day on your scalp to curtail the frizzies.

Carol's Daughter (request a catalog to see all of her products) makes a fantastic line of hair care products for African Americans. Her products have been featured on Oprah Winfrey's show and are simply wonderful. My favorite is Tui leave in conditioner. The tui oil conditions and hydrates your scalp and is scented with lavender and mango for exotic smelling hair.

Blended Beauty has an entire line of products created for kinky curls, Afros and relaxed hair. Happy Nappy Styles is one of Blended Beauty's products and it dries soft and is never greasy. Many people have recommended this product to me and is suitable for use on children too.

The right brush is essential for caring for your African American hair. The Kakakiki KombBrush was created with rounded-tines so that it would not get tangled and break the hair. All you need to do is moisturize and put the brush through your hair. It gently massages your scalp, which helps to stimulate hair growth.

Prom Hair Styles

Posted by Kenny On October - 22 - 2008

For almost every teenager, prom is an incredibly special time in young-adult life. Most times, girls are looking forward to dancing with their sweetheart and if not, they are anxiously awaiting to be asked by the perfect guy. Prom is the time when teens can finally replace jeans and sweatshirts with a beautiful, elegant prom dress that will transform them for one night into a vision of the mature adults they will become. Of course, in order to do this, each teen needs the “right” dress and the “right” prom hairstyle to go with it.

Traditional prom hairstyles have been replaced by current ones and every year new styles are created. Because of this variety created in recent years, there are innumerable options for great prom hairstyles to choose from for that very special night.

Most teens tend to do their shopping for that perfect stunning dress with a friend. Also, many teens go above and beyond having nail treatments done to complement their outfit. Some really splurge having facials and other spa treatments in order to look and feel fabulous. Of course, one of the most essential elements of this process is hairstyling. The perfect gown needs a perfect hairstyle to complete the look beautifully.

Prom is the perfect time to be treated like a queen; to put yourself first and do some very special things to let the beautiful you shine! It is the ideal time to create excitement on the top of the head with a flawless prom hairstyle. Most importantly, remember that creating this look does not have to mean spending a lot of money.

There are several tips to keep in mind when trying to achieve a glamorous, million-dollar look that everyone in the room will envy:

Although ponytails are an every-day look, they are actually perfect for prom as well if done right. Secure the hair in a high ponytail, pulling a few strands out. This creates a soft yet spiky look. Use a wax-based hair product or a heavy duty hairspray to work the strands so they stick out exactly the way you want them to. Then, use a beaded ponytail holder to make the do fancy and glamorous.

If sticking to a single ponytail, gemmed clasps or pins can be used to create a separated look with multiple strands. This is an ideal prom hairstyle for a chic and elegant look.

Another option for a ponytail-based hairstyle is to separate the ponytail into two sections. Then each section is twisted individually into random knots. The knots created can then be pinned to the head using crystal hairpins or shortsticks. A sassier look can be achieved by simply pulling a few strands out of each knot and using hairspray to keep them in place.

Use a ribbon in a matching color to the prom dress to accentuate a ponytail look. Start with a ponytail in the midsection of the head. Then weave the chosen ribbon through the hair to achieve a crisscross effect. If a friend or family member is available to help and you have two sets of hands, some very elegant designs can be achieved.

Use large sized rollers to create luscious curls and bounce to the ponytail. In order to really make the ponytail glisten and shine, use a spritz or spray. One fun way to dress it up is to use glitter spray which will make the hair sparkle.

Flowers of any kind are a beautiful way to enhance any hairstyle. These flowers can be natural and real or silk and synthetic. They can then be braided into a ponytail or simply placed behind one ear for a soft, feminine touch. Actress, Drew Barrymore, uses flowers as her signature and wears them perfectly to enhance her hairstyles.
If the hair is short close to the prom date, it might be time for a special treat! Hair extensions are a great way to really spice it up and create a drastically different prom hairstyle for the special night. Extensions are temporary but can be worn for several weeks after the event and then taken out.

Along with using color, flowers and jewels with prom hairstyles, hair stencils have become a very popular styling technique. Stencils create designs using temporary paint or glitter. They allow for a formal look and can also create the perfect trendy, funky look.

Although stencils are more effective with short hair, they are not limited to shorter hairstyles as they can be used with a variety of hair lengths. Regardless of length, stencils are sure to create a wonderfully unique design; no one else at the prom will have the same do as you! This prom hairstyle depends on individuality, creativity, and imagination. It is important to allow time for a few practice rounds if this will be the first time stencils are used.

The first step is to create the pattern with cardboard or poster board. This ensures that the design will be consistent and neat. Another idea is to visit a local craft or hobby store and purchase a pre-made stencil that appeals to you. If this is the first time stencils have been used, remember to start small and simple as this will create the best look for the first time. All of this can be done alone but it is much easier and a lot more fun to do it with a friend!

After the design is chosen, shampoo the hair and rinse with a deep penetrating conditioner. In order to achieve the best results, it is wise to buy a leave-in conditioner that specifically provides protection against gel, glitter and color. After this, blow dry the hair until it is completely straight. Once straightened, the stencil is placed directly onto the part of the hair it is designed to cover. A helping hand during this step might be necessary. When the desired position is achieved, apply the glitter and color to the hair.

After the stencil is applied and the color or glitter has set, use the fingers to very carefully arrange the hair. Most importantly, use a firm holding spray so that the hair will stay in place for your magnificent night at the dance!

When the prom hairstyle is perfectly accomplished, make sure to choose the right make-up that will complement and accentuate the look. If applying make-up without assistance, make sure to have full control. If prior make-up experience is minimal, it might be a wise decision to turn to a professional make-up artist or beautician. Allison Saunders is a prime example of a professional to learn from as she reveals her Hollywood make-over secrets that will keep the heads turning all night long.

Hairstyles to Suit a Long Face

Posted by Kenny On October - 14 - 2008

Women with oblong or long faces bemoan the fact that they tend to appear older than others. Round face shapes may make a woman's face appear babyish. Oval face shapes are simply perfect. Square face shapes exudes a strong personality, while oblong face shapes are simply unique.

However, your face shape does not have to remain visually permanent. In fact, with the right choice of hairstyle, the oblong or long face can appear fabulous and sensual. In fact, the long face is the perfect canvass to create a classic feminine look. But what hairstyles will suit a long face?

Do you really have a long face?

First, a woman must solidly verify that she has indeed an oblong face. It would be a pity to wear hairstyles suited for long faces when the face shape is actually an oval or a diamond. To determine your face shape, look for a photograph of yourself that shows the front of your face directly. Pictures that show your face at an angle will not work. It is important to have the whole face exposed in the photo.

Take a tape measure and measure the distance between the hairline and the tip of the chin. This is the length of your face. Then, measure the distance between the edges of the sides of the face. This should be done across the cheeks. This distance is the width of the face. And finally, the length is divided by the width. If the calculation result is higher than 1.5, then your face absolutely has a long face shape.

What are your best features?

Second, you should determine which part of your face is your best feature. Is it the sultry eyes? Is it the pouting well-shaped lips? Is it the proud little nose? Is it the flawless skin? Identifying the best feature on the face is important because this feature must be highlighted or flaunted. Next to the long face shape, this is another consideration that a woman must take when choosing suitable hairstyles. For example, a chic bob will highlight the lips. Wispy bangs will bring attention to the eyes.

Third, you should make a list of styles that you must avoid. These hairstyles will usually make the face appear longer. Some of the hairstyles to avoid are those that are too short and too long. The length of the hairstyle should not appear like an army cut. Think how Kristian Alfonso would look like if she chooses to wear a skull-capping haircut. It would be disastrous because she has a long face. But the length of the hairstyle should not go beyond the bust line. Sarah Jessica Parker tried growing her hair at that length and the result was horrendous. She quickly rectified that mistake by shortening the length of her hair.

A loyal fan may disagree with this observation and may believe that Sarah Jessica Parker can do no wrong when it comes to hairstyles. But if two pictures of her are placed side by side, one with hair extensions going beyond the bust line and the other with the hair length just brushing the shoulders, it is easy to realize that the latter hairstyle looks significantly more attractive than the former.

And fourth, the woman with a long face shape must decide the kind of jazz that she needs for her hairstyle. If the hair is straight, it needs layered cuts to add volume. If the hair is curly, it needs styling and taming to bring out the best features of the face. It would be great for the curls to frame her face, especially around the jaw line. This will provide the illusion that the face shape is shorter. If bangs are chosen, these can be wispy, side-swept, or blunt. And if no bangs are wanted, the hair should be blown smoothly to add width.

Long Hairstyles For Women Over 40 – Good Or Bad?

Posted by Kenny On October - 14 - 2008

We all love long hair at any age, but once we start getting into our 40's really long hair doesn't look as good on us any longer. This doesn't stand true for everyone but most who are just wearing their long hair in a ponytail really need to start looking into a more attractive hair style that is shorter and just as easy to take care of.

Problems with long hair on women over 40 is:

Long hair tends to drag ones features down and usually has less life and no volume. Yet you see women over 40 with hair that has no life but are afraid to cut it. The longer your hair is the heavier its going to be, which if it's all one length your hair will look flat and life less. Its very unattractive for anyone with hair that is long with no life because it can add to your age not take away from it. Another problem is when you take all that time to style it, the style doesn't last more than an hour without tons of product it in. Again too much product will drag your hair down and make it limp. Just throwing your hair into a ponytail cause you don't want to deal with it, doesn't look well on you either.

A great example of a good hair style for women over 40 would be Meg Ryan's A-line Bob. Her hair is naturally curly but when she wears it natural, it works for a 'do' for a night on the town or a busy day at the office. Easy to work with, and it you can wear it at any age even grandmothers in the 60's.

Hairstyles that are A-line with layers and shoulder length with shaggy layers are two very workable styles for today's women over 40. Cuts such as Victoria Beckman are great for the younger crowd but are too harsh for those over 40.

One thing you need to take into account is one's shape of one's face. It becomes a huge factor in finding the right style for you. Don't forget that color is also a factor in your hairstyle as well as lifestyle. Gray hair is great but you don't need to have it with so many choice of colors you can get these days. Covering up your gray isn't considered wrong in today world it has become more of a statement you're too hip to be gray. Covering gray isn't like it used to be, it can be done quickly with too much trouble by a good hairstylist.

Don't make the mistake that all over one color is best because it can age you worse than just leaving in the gray alone. Look for a hairstylist that can explain better what high lights, and or low lights can do to help open up your face making it look younger. It's time to start thinking about having bangs, even if they are just wispy ones because bangs take away from your age not add to it. Parting your hair down the middle and just letting it hang there is just too old for you! Start thinking about actresses you see that are over 40 and you will see that they are changing up their hair styles to look younger. Take pictures with you to your next haircut of anyone who you know to be over 40 with a hairstyle you really like. A good hairstylist will let you know if your hair is right for that cut.

Take the time to start thinking about hairstyles you like, but remember you don't need to go super short either. Not everyone can pull off Jamie Lee Curtis latest pixie cut. Hairstyles are highly personal and based on lots of different factors, talking with your hairstylist about how much time you are willing to take in the morning for a new hairstyle. She/He will be able to help you decide what works for you. Changing up your hairstyle can add life, luster and fun back to your life.

Hairstyles For Women Over 60

Posted by Kenny On October - 14 - 2008

What does Suzanne Somers, Julie Christie and Barbra Streisand all have in common? They are all over 60 and sexy. Tina Turner is ageless and gorgeous. Over sixty is the new sexy. Women are wearing soft beautiful hair and it makes them look younger.

The old wives tale of cutting your hair short over forty has finally seen its day. Gone are the old ideas of short hair lifting the face. A new age of beauties are emerging. They have longer, updated hair that shines and moves. Longer hair gives the face a youthful appearance. It softens lines while lending a shadow to the neck. Longer layers give the hair height and movement. Hair cut to the shoulder or just above is a versatile length.

It is important to have a good cut. Find a hairdresser who knows how to cut hair and give you a look. A good hairdresser can take the looks of today and adapt them to suit your hair, face and body type. Make your hair look and feel thicker with a volumizing haircut. Keep your hair well groomed. Have it shaped regularly.

Color your hair if it is grey. Grey hair can be a double negative. It can make your skin look tired and sallow. It can be coarse and unruly. Hair color makes grey hair more manageable. Studies have shown women and men who color their hair feel better about their self and have less depression. Keep your roots touched up. If you cannot go to the hairdresser in between appointments there are excellent hair color products on the market so you can do it yourself.
Learn to blow dry and style your hair. Nothing is more ageing than an out of date hairstyle. Learn the new ways to style and the tools to make it happen. Once you learn the basics it only takes minutes to look good. Look to the ageless beauties for inspiration. They know their hair and how to style it. They do not rely on hairdressers every single day to look good. They can style their hair.

Experiment with new products. There are products to thicken thin hair made with natural ingredients. Some of the new shaping hair sprays are the work horses of products. They set, lift and hold your hair keeping it soft and shiny. Stiff hair is not in vogue right now and it is very ageing.

Judaysia has been helping women have thicker, fuller ageless hair. She is the author of How To Style Your Hair and Hairstyles To Make You Look Younger and Thinner. Her signature line of products are used by stylists and celebrities world wide.

5 Hot Curly Hair Styles For the Summer

Posted by Kenny On October - 14 - 2008

The essential factor to creating some of the hottest curly hair styles is proper conditioning with hair care products. Moisture and more moisture is the best ingredient to ensure a minimum of frizz and beautifully defined curls.

Long Curls

Wearing your curls long gives you a variety of styles from pinned up to down, up-dos and free flowing. With embellishments and added control, your curls take long hair to a new level of beauty, basking in the attention that naturally curly hair styles draw. Opt for definition and layers, giving body and movement to your curls for a hot, summer look.

Curly Shag

For a delightful twist to the trendy Shag hair style, curls offer natural body with a minimum amount of layers. Easily maintained with good styling and hair care products, this cut uses layers to bring out your definition and enables the curls to give a moving performance. Long curls are lightened with the added layers which keep the heat off your neck through those hot summer months. Seventies styles are "in" and the shag hair style is leading the way - with a little help from '08 technology and layered designs.

Short Curls

Wearing short hair makes an unspoken statement of confidence and gives an air of individuality. Sporting short curly hair only adds to the air of mystery and singular style that is unique to each head of curly hair. Because no curls are the same, everyone looks different, even with the same cut. Adding volume with the short length gives an airy look with playful intentions with the ability to be gelled into a glamorous look for evening wear. Bangs are increasingly popular with short hair, but consider the manageability you want...short hair is beautiful, but you can't put it back if you go too short.

Ringlets

Timeless in their beauty and appeal, ringlets have long since been adored by little girls and women alike. Making this classic style trendy with the addition of layers and razor cuts, it leaps the boundaries of antiquity and heads for a more modern look for both day and evening wear. Offering respite for both short and long hair, this look surpasses the simple classic style and transcends to achieve a sexy or chic look.

Perms

If all else fails and your hair is naturally stick straight. Investing in a good perm is one way of achieving beautiful curly hair styles. With the leaps and bounds of excellent perm development over the years, your options range from soft waves to tight, springy ringlets. Almost any curly hair is an option in today's beauty industry.

Trendy Medium Haircuts

Posted by Kenny On October - 14 - 2008

Hairstyles are personal style statements. Hair cuts are important for a person to exude confidence. Convenient length happens in medium haircuts. The length is easy to maintain and offers variety in styling. It is advisable to actually browse through pictures on haircuts and understand the required maintenance factor before you actually cut your tresses.

Climate changes the texture of your hair. Change in the season or a geographical shift means that you need to change your shampoo and conditioners. Medium hair cuts can alter the shape of your facial features. When hair is left open, the features look different and a high pony tail is perfect to beat the summer heat. Accessorize your hair and maintain a fall. Looks can be cultivated for casual daily wear and also formal party times.

Blonde hairstyles look great with absolute poker straight hair and partings can bring about a different look. Make sure to keep arranging your hair with the fingers every time it gets awry. At times let the natural wavy hair have its own fall. Use a simple blow dry method and let hair loose. Manageable haircuts for medium length hair can be explored in simple blow dry methods. Formal corporate medium haircuts can be chic in even length. A coaxing with curlers can transform it to an uneven fall and that seems perfect for an evening out.

Use a trendy medium haircut in sedu hairstyle or a shag cut. Colour your hair suitably for that perfect makeover. Updo styles can also be done with medium haircuts since the length is just right. Posted by Kenny On October - 14 - 2008

Hair is one of important determiners for you to appear attractive or not. With your beautiful hair, you will easily arrange you hair, change the style you want, and appear better looking, so, it will build your confident. Moreover if your profession deals mostly with public affair that you should look attractive, it will be very pity if your hair is not in a good condition, although only one piece.

There are some factors causing your hair out of order. Those factors, however, can be classified into two categories, namely internal factor and external factor. Internal factor that influences hair condition is genetic factor such as the type and condition you have possessed since you were born. This factor is difficult to be solved, and you need not to worry about it. In other word, you should pay extra attention on external factors that come from outside your body for example environment, treatment, disease, and food or nutrition.

  1. Environmental Factor
This factor is mostly caused by bad weather like sunburning, air pollution, water pollution especially polluted water used to rinse your hair, swimming in unhealthy water such as in the sea or in the chlorine contaminated water. We all know that one of the hair function is to protect your head from sunburning, but it does not mean that you may have sunbathing under an overheat weather continuously as the heat can damage your hair.
  2. The Factor of Treatment
It is more influenced by the way you treat your hair. For the sake of appearance, people usually give over treatment for their hair such as changing color frequently, using an overheat blow dryer, curling iron, flat iron, using some products containing chemical agent, using improper product for the hair texture and condition, using highly densed comb, etc. Wearing hat and helm continuously will also cause the hair too humid and finally damage it. To avoid those problem above, you should recognize the characters of your hair and then give proper treatment. Select some products which are suitable for your hair type. The more natural the product is, the lower the risk will be. Use some tools only when necessary. If you have got short hair for example, it is unnecessary to use a blow dryer. Using a towel instead of blow dryer is enough.
  3. The Factor of Disease
There are some diseases that can damage hair beauty such as fever, head skin problem, cancer, stress, etc. The chronic disease like cancer can cause permanently bald headed. That is why you should always keep your health so that your hair grows well.
  4. The Factor of Nutrition
Fatty, too hot, and under nutritious food will badly affect the beauty of your hair. So, you should consume a lot of nutritious foods to have healthy hair.

What to Look For When Visiting a New Hair Salon

Posted by Kenny On October - 14 - 2008

If you are considering a visit to a salon that you have not been to before, then make an appointment for an initial consultation before you book a haircut or color. These are very often free and can save a lot of heartache in the future.

Use your time at this appointment to look for the following issues that could mean that you are not going to get the attention and service that you require.

What type of atmosphere are you looking for? Are you looking for an outing to socialize and visit with others while getting your service of hair, face, toes or massage? Or, are you looking to enjoy getting a service done in a more private setting? Then a salon that has a location that puts clients in front of a window with foot traffic walking by may not be for you.

A salon that services there clients in individual spaces may also be considered. A salon that maintains a quieter atmosphere with soothing music, less talk, would lend to a relaxing experience.

Do the staff and management all seem to be friendly with each other (albeit in a professional way) as well as with the clients? If there are signs of friction between the staff then you run the risk of a bad day being taken out on your hair!

Does the staff answer personal calls on their cell phones while they are with clients? If so then they are probably not paying the amount of attention to their client as they should.

Inquire with the receptionist about cancellations among the staff. Is the staff attentive? How long did you have to wait in reception to book your appointment? These are signs that will show you how seriously the staff takes the client/hairdresser relationship, as well as their level of professionalism.

Is the salon clean and tidy? Are dirty towels left hanging around rather than being put out of site quickly? Does your gown smell clean and fresh? Is the equipment well maintained and clean? Remember that it will be used on your own hair at your appointment.

If you are not happy with any of the above, then do not feel obliged to follow up your initial consultation with another appointment. It is important that you feel totally at ease with your hairdresser and your surroundings before you let anyone near you with the scissors!
