Restore Your Hair To It’s Past Glory

Posted by Kenny On April - 22 - 2010

If you are like me you may have started to get a little thin on top and not even know it.  Or maybe you have noticed the hair line retreating from your forehead over the last couple of years.  I really never realized how much hair I had lost until a trip to Hawaii opened my eyes.  Actually, it wasn’t the trip so much as the pictures we took on the vacation.  One night, back on the mainland, we were looking at the photos and a shot of the top of my head happened to come up.  I was almost completely bald.  Actually it looked worse than it was because I was swimming so my hair was not fluffed up but still I was going bald.

There is no way I wanted to look like my dad or worse yet my brother who was completely void on top by the time he was thirty.  I made a vow to find out which hair restorer really worked.  I did a lot of research and found out there are only two drugs which have been authorized by the US FDA for the treatment of male pattern baldness.  These are Finasteride, which is only sold by prescription and has the potential for nasty side effects; and Minoxidil which is purchased over the counter.

I decided to try a generic form of Minoxidil and I am very happy with the results.  My wife says the spot is all gone and she is upset because she doesn’t have anything to tease me about any more.  I apply the liquid twice a day, in the morning and night, and that is all there is to it.

I have stopped losing my hair and I have actually had some hair grow back in.  This is not a permanent cure because I will have to use it as long as I want my hair to grow, but it is much better than being called chrome dome, or bald eagle. There are also some hair restorer natural products like saw palmetto but for now I am happy with what I am using.

Finding the Perfect Straight Iron for Coarse or Wavy Hair

Posted by Kenny On April - 13 - 2010

If you have coarse hair, you may have a hard time finding a flat iron that can tame your hair, but never fear: they do exist. A professional flat iron is a good investment because they are usually sturdier, longer lasting, and have adjustable heat settings. The Hot Tools Hot Air Flat Iron comes with 600 watts of power with two speeds and two heat settings, plus a "cool shot" setting. The flat iron heads are removable and cleanable, and the iron has a heavy duty swivel cord for convenience. It comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Another great choice, particularly for longer coarse hair, is the Solia Flat Iron 1-3/4". The ceramic/ tourmaline plates make hair shinier and silkier and can be used on dry or damp hair. The heat settings go up to 450 degrees F - hot enough to tame even the coarsest hair. The ceramic heater gives quick, evenly distributed heat, and the heating plates wrap around the edges so you can easily finish off a section of hair without snagging. The Solia Ceramic Ion Flat Iron comes with a two-year limited warranty making it a really reliable choice. Straightening your hair with a flat iron has never been easier! Just check out some of the solia flat iron reviews and we are sure you will see how it stands up to others.

The HAI Convertable Ceramic Flat Iron is another consideration for thick, course hair as it has sapphire ceramic plates that are as good as it gets for equal heat distribution. Infrared heat technology keeps hair shiny and healthy. It heats up fast (less than 25 seconds) and has the on / off switch on the temperature control thermostat. There are five heat settings ranging from 140 degrees F to 410 degrees F, so it definitely gets hot enough to cope with thick hair. It comes with a swivel cord and ergonomic design that's perfect for pressing, holding, and curling hair. The plates are 1-1/4 inches wide for every hair length, and it comes with a one-year limited warranty.

Hair Color Removal

Posted by Kenny On August - 24 - 2009

Hair color removal becomes necessary if your home coloring experiment went horribly wrong, or if you’re simply not happy with the results, even though they don’t look terrible. Hair color removal can be challenging, whether you tackle it on your own or have a professional take care of it.

It is important to be aware of the effects of artificial and natural color that exists in your hair. Permanent hair color doesn’t lift out artificial color existing on the hair. Bleaching hair lightens artificial coloring (mostly with very dark colors) and it does this slower than natural pigments would through regrowth. If you used an inexpensive hair color from a supermarket or drug store, check to ensure that they do not contain any metallic salts or dye components. If these same products are processed with perm solutions, bleach or chemical straighteners, they can severely damage your hair. Darker colors tend to have more of these ingredients, which means that the more hair color you’ve used, the more metallic salts are deposited in the pores and follicles of your hair.

A simple way to remove hair coloring is to lift the pigment out with a shampoo cap, which is a less harsh form of bleaching your hair. mix peroxide, bleach and shampoo so as to make a smooth paste. Place some onto the ends of the hair that are holding the darkest color change, and slowly begin working it through your hair, but be careful to avoid the hair that has your natural color.

Although this process is less damaging than bleaching your hair, it still requires you to take some extra special care of your hair afterwards. Try a deep conditioning treatment to help your hair regain some of its health. Switch to a milder shampoo for a few weeks after the process, and avoid direct sunlight hitting your hair.

Hot water can sometimes fade chemical hair coloring away, if you try it within three days of the treatment. Volume gels and shampoos are usually made in such a way that they open up the hair cuticle. This being the case, they can speed up the removing of your hair color, but won’t completely remove it.

You can also try heating up some extra-virgin olive oil. Be careful while doing this because in order to strip your hair of the color the oil needs to be quite hot. It’s best to have someone else’s help while trying this method out.

Getting yourself a new hair cut can minimize the effects of your new hair color. If you go to a hair stylist they will probably know the best cut that can camouflage your hair color satisfactorily. If the hair color product you used was enhanced with chlorine, then using special chlorine removing shampoo can help to tone the color down.

One ‘n’ Only Colorfix is a product that is worthy of mention as it removes permanent hair coloring and can even remove it from specific areas. Similarly, Clairol products can remove semi permanent hair coloring in a few gentle, easy and quick steps.

Updo Hairstyles for Black Women

Posted by Kenny On July - 1 - 2009

Black women have natural curly hair. As a reason, many people think that updo hairstyles are not in for them. Black women usually go for braids or straight hair because they have curly hair. However, curly hair can be advantageous when it comes to creating an updo because many updo styles entail the curling of the hair. A classic updo hairstyle looks beautiful on black women. The hair swept away from the face can display the shape of the face and strong facial features. There is hardly any need for make up! The overall result is a soft and bright look.

The major issues black women face is that their hair lacks the ability to hold moisture. These days, there are some fantastic hair care products that are specially designed for black women. Among these products, there are some that are a combination of some chemicals. Using these chemicals can damage the hair. For the perfect hair treatment, natural hair care products are recommended. For dry or damaged hair, a conditioner will help restore the life of the hair. It is important to dry the hair with a blower before going for a updo hairstyle. A proper hair care product can moisturize the hair properly and create that perfect condition to flaunt a classical updo hairstyle.

An updo hairstyle helps keep the hair in healthy. Apart from that, it is neat and classy.
To create a classical updo hairstyle, the least section of hair has to be taken from the nape of the neck so that the section forms a straight line. The rest of the hair needs to be put up towards the top of the head. A straightener now needs to be applied, starting from the top and ending at the end of the hair. This has to be done gently and patiently. The hair has to be divided into sections and straightened section by section. More number of sections will ensure that the hair is smoother and straighter. Once the entire hair is straight, two thirds of it should be put back up. The straightener should be now twisted and pulled down and backwards. More twists will tighten the curls. Once the hair is all in place, a hair spray or gel will keep the arrangement in place. After all this is done, the entire arrangement can be converted to an updo.

The most simple updo hairstyle for black women is to brush the hair back to create a ponytail. Then the hair needs to be twisted till it is secure and pinned to the head. The top portion of the hair should be allowed to fall freely over the clipping pins.

Many black women tend to go for the updo hairstyle only during formal occasions. However, the updo hairstyle can be used any time. It is a hassle free style that accentuates the facial features and creates that classy look. Black women are one of the most beautiful in the world and a classy look on them sets them apart.

How To Braid Cornrows

Posted by Kenny On June - 29 - 2009

Cornrows are a traditional way of braiding the hair in Africa. This is easy to maintain and requires only a little bit of oiling of the scalp and careful washing. While they used to be done in straight lines, it is now done with crazy geometric designs and curves. It has become a rage in recent years with rock stars popularizing it too.

Though it looks complicated, it is not as difficult to get it done as it looks and can even be done at home. One can get the hang of it with a little practice. The underhand cornrow can be done by first parting the hair into 2 inch sections. Oil should then be massaged into the scalp and the hair. Butterfly clips come in handy to keep the hair you aren’t working with out of the way. Now take one section and divide it into three equal parts. Pass the left strand under the center strand, keeping it close to the scalp. Next move the right strand under the centre stand.

The next step is important in developing a neat corn row. Add a strand of hair from the same section to the left strand before passing it under the center strand and next add another stand from the other side to the right strand before passing it under the center strand. Keep doing it till you reach the end of the hair. Tie a rubber band to keep it in place.

Care should be taken, as you take new strands into the braid, to keep the partings neat. An alternate way to end the braid is to singe the ends. This can cause damage to your hair hence is usually not advised. If you have really tangled hair, a detangling solution can be used. The cornrows can be left that way for many weeks and for those with unruly hair, this is a wonderful solution. If the braids are done on damp hair, they will tighten on drying which will make them look very well done.

Instead of straight cornrows, if you have a specific pattern in mind, draw it out on a paper and keep it around to remind you which way the partition should go. This will have to be done initially as you part and apply oil. Keeping the braids too tight can give you headaches and you should let the person who is braiding you know that the braids are tight as they do it.

A lot of care should be taken while shampooing. Shampoo can be pressed into the hair and rinsed out by letting a stream of water run through it. A lot of attention should be given to the scalp as well to prevent drying and itching as a result. To get a shine on the braids, sprays can be used or honey mixed in water has the same effect. Though time consuming, it is very popular among young people. It can also be accessorized with beads and shells.

Step 2: Once you are able to locate a salon for black hair braiding, ask for an appointment have a trial session or if they can show you the braiding done on any customer. It is very important to know how this hair braiding is done and how it will look on you. You can check out the illustrations of these hairstyles in the salon. Take a fair idea about the time span to get this hairstyle done, as time is the main factor in hair braiding. It can take few minutes to several hours depending on the density of hair braids.

Step 4: On an appointment day, wash your hair thoroughly to have a clean and smooth surface. Primarily the hairstylists will divide the hair into three sections for braiding. You can get the braiding up to the desired length of your hair with more sections. But make sure that the hairstylist maintains an equal tightness in all the sections.
