Home Remedies for Silky and Smooth Hair

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On February - 28 - 2011

Dry hair is definitely not something one wants. It is a big mess and it becomes a big problem handling dry hair. You wash it, it still looks the same, you comb it and it still appears to be the same. Sometimes nature harms your hair and sometimes you yourself become the enemy of your hair. Sun, rain, wind are some factors which are contributed by environment in the cause and some mistakes like using harsh shampoos, hair dyes, blowers, curling iron rods and getting perms done, are committed by us. We all wish long smooth hair but we forget that it is not easy to maintain long hair. Sometimes some internal influences affect our hair and make it dry for which we cannot put blame on anyone or anything such as being on heavy medication, prolonged illness, cancer treatment, etc. But we can always try for some solutions.

Though there are various hair care products available in market, they might be out of your budget. Not everyone can afford to go for expensive products and help the dry hair to regain its beauty. So here are some home remedies from granny’s diary which will surely prove helpful and make it much easier for you to manage your unmanageable hair.

The very first remedy which any one will ask you to do is proper oiling. Coconut oil is very useful for dry hair. Give a good massage to your hair with warm coconut oil once a week and see the difference. If crushed almonds are added to this warm oil then it will work wonders. Massage your hair, starting from the roots to the tips. After massaging wrap a towel around your hair, soaked in warm water. Make sure water is not dripping. Repeat this procedure two times. This will provide moisture to your hair. Second best remedy is to apply honey on your hair and leave it for 20 to 30 minutes. Then wash it with warm water. Don’t repeat it too often as it can result in gray hair.

Even bananas are very good for your hair. You only have to mash two ripe bananas and add curd to it. Apply it to your hair and wear a shower cap after that. After 20 minutes wash your hair and feel the new texture of your hair. But nothing is more effective than egg remedy. Beat an egg, add yogurt to it. Few drops of lemon and coconut oil should be added to the mixture and applied to hair. After 1 hour just rinse it with water, avoid using shampoo. Your hair will become as fine as silk.

Dry hair is very fragile and that’s why they can break down very easily so it becomes a necessity to take proper care of them not only though external means but also by taking a proper diet which will give you nutritious and will help you in keeping your hair healthy.

How To Use Sulfate Free Shampoo

Posted by Kenny On February - 24 - 2011

We've all heard the news.  Sulfates are bad for our hair, skin, and the environment so you've made the decision to go for a  sulfate free shampoo.  Good for you.  Sulfates have been linked to hair thinning and loss, they are absorbed by your liver and mimic the hormones estrogen, and are not biodegradable so they are harmful to our environment.

You've done the research and you've chosen your product but the first time you washed your hair the sulfate free shampoo didn't lather like you are used to and it didn't seem to get your hair as clean.  Well sulfates are the sudsy agent in your old shampoo that made it bubble and lather like that and a common misconception are the more bubbles there are the better the shampoo is.  In actuality the bubbles and lather are just to aid in the lubrication of the hair shaft and scalp to make it easier for you to massage the product in.  There is a correct way to use SLS Free Shampoos to make your hair feel it's best.

  • Wet hair as usual
  • Apply a VERY small amount of shampoo and work only on scalp
  • Rinse
  • Apply a bit more shampoo and work from scalp to ends
  • Rinse

The detergents used in sulfate free shampoos are milder and you will feel much cleaner if you lather rinse and repeat.  You only need a very small amount the first time and even the second wash you don't need much.  Remember a SLS free shampoo will not lather the same as a shampoo with sulfates so don't expect those thick rich bubbles and you do not need them.

Once you get used to using them, your hair and scalp will feel healthier, cleaner, full of more life and body not to mention that the environment will thank you for it.  No go eco-friendly and wash your hair.

What Is Dry Shampoo?

Posted by Kenny On February - 23 - 2011

It seems like such an alien concept but what is dry shampoo really?  Simply put, dry shampoo is a powdery substance that is massaged into the hair to remove oils, odors, and contaminants.  Women have been making their own dry shampoos for years using product like flour, cornstarch, oatmeal, almonds, baby powder, and baking soda just to name a few.  Although not meant to replace traditional washing, dry shampoos are perfect for active lifestyles when a refresher is needed but water washing just isn't practical.  They are great for a mid-day pick up, after work when you aren't heading home, camping, after the gym, to rid your hair of restaurant odors after eating out, or any time that you feel that your hair needs a boost of life and texture.

The first commercially available dry shampoo was introduced in the 70s and there were many complaints about it being messy or leaving residues on the shaft and scalp, but advancements have brought a whole new type of aerosol dries that work better, leave virtually no residue, and leave hair smelling fresh.  They all are applied virtually the same way.

  • Separate hair into 1.5 inch sections
  • Hold can 2 inches away and spray from root to tip
  • Use your fingers to lift and separate hair as you spray
  • Massage product into roots and scalp
  • Let sit for 2 minutes
  • Brush product out

Though there are now hundreds of dry shampoo products on the market right now my personal favorite is Batiste Dry Shampoo.  It comes in both a home and a travel size and a variety of scents.  The Original Scent is the lightest and Diva is the most dramatic.  I prefer the Blush Scent.  It is a light floral scent that makes my hair feel freshly washed and rejuvenated.  The travel size is perfect for your desk drawer, purse, gym bag, or glove box and is big enough to get the job done but small enough to fit into my evening hand bag.

Dry shampoos are a great substitute for when water washing just isn't an option.  Make your own or choose from the many great products out there and have the freshest cleanest hair you've ever felt.

Best Styles of Braiding Hair to Give a Unique Look

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On February - 22 - 2011

Braid hairstyles are one of the most common and the simplest hairstyles. Women in earlier times preferred this hairstyle because it was easy and very convenient too. They use to oil up their hair and then tighten it up in a braid. But very few people know this that there are many styles under this category also. Different styles suit different face cuts and match up with diverse dresses. This kind of hairstyle is very much in trend now days. Now the messy and loose braids are much preferred rather than those tight and cleanly set up braids.

The first one is classic English hair braid which is the most basic one. The first step to make this kind of braid would be brushing the hair as to remove all the knots and tangles. Then divide all hair into three equal parts at the nape of your neck. Now cross the right hand segment of hair over the middle section and the left hand section over the original right hand section. Repeat this procedure till you cover maximum length of your hair. Keep pulling the hair sections to give it a neater look. Put an elastic band at the end of the braid to make sure it doesn’t loosen up.

Then is fishtail braid which is best for long hair. It is also called herringbone braid. For this style you have to divide your hair into two equal parts. Use a rat tail comb and pull out a half inch wide narrow section of hair from the left side. Now cross this part with the right side of hair. Now pull out a half inch wide narrow section of hair from the right side and cross towards the left side. When you are done with the procedure put a rubber band at the end.

French braid is the most difficult one to master. For this style you need to divide hair into three narrow and equal sections at the crown. Cross the right hair section over the middle section and then the left hand section over the original right section like you did in classic English braid. And after this is done you have to follow the procedure for fishtail braid. Take some hair out from right side, cross it over the middle section and then do the same from the left side. Finally it gives you a beautiful woven look.

Rope braid is next on this list. Divide your hair into two equal parts. Now individually twist both the hair sections in clockwise directions. Twist it for few inches and then cross right hand section over the left hand section. Now you have to start twisting it in anticlockwise direction and that too together. Keep repeating this procedure. And here you have a perfect rope braid.

The various styles which you can try and experiment with your looks are described above in details. Choose the best option which will add shining stars to your looks.

Solutions for Curly Frizzy Hair

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On February - 22 - 2011

The hair shaft is compromised of cuticle layers. These cuticle layers stand up sometimes. And when this happens hair looks frizzy and dry. Frizzy hair is naturally permeable. To some frizzy hair comes naturally and some people themselves become a cause for this disaster. Some causes of frizzy hair are crude texture, over-styling, coloring, perming and bleaching the hair. When hair is not properly moistened even then one gets prone to this kind of ugly hair. Not taking a proper diet and unable to provide ample quantity of protein is also the cause. Some environmental factors such as high humidity in the weather, strong winds, exposure to heavy strong rays of sun also affects the quality of hair.

There are many remedies which will help you to get rid of this problem of frizzy hair. You just need to know the real cause. Reduce those products which have a high level of harsh chemicals. Avoid products that contain sodium, calcium, lye and lithium. Many oil based products also contribute to the cause. One should need to keep away from heat no matter if it is coming from sun or other resources. Cover your hair when you go out in sun. Avoid blow dryers and curling iron rods. Give your hair some rest and do not use such appliances. Straightening comb also wreak hair so avoid that too. Washing hair with hot hair and applying hot oil should also be prohibited. Natural hair products are preferred rather than those products which have high content of alcohol in them and all your gels, mousses, hairsprays possess that.

Do not brush and comb your hair again and again. For smooth healthy hair you do not have to give 100 strokes to your hair per day. Do not even scratch your scalp continuously. It can cause infections and dandruffs. So basically you have to keep your hand in control and away from hair. Do not shampoo hair daily. There are many hair shampoos which claim to give you best results if you use it daily but this is just a false claim. It will rather take out all the natural oil from your hair which provides best moisturizer. Use such conditioners which have coconut or castor oil as their content.

Some of the home remedies to curb this problem are really easy to follow. Add some natural vegetable glycerine either to your mousse or gel and then apply it. It will surely lessen the harsh effect of such artificial products. To achieve a balanced pH level for your hair, apply vinegar to your cuticles. A paste of olive oil and egg will also prove to be very effective. Just mix the two in equal proportions and apply it directly to hair, leave it for half an hour and after then rinse with cold water.

These few simple steps will surely make your hair less frizzy and it will become easy for you to manage your hair.

Black Hair – The Facts

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On February - 22 - 2011

Black is one of the most common color of hair and the darkest one too. It comes to you genetically and people with black hair color can come from all kinds of backgrounds and ethnicities. Large amount of eumelanin give your hair black color. It is the shiniest of all hair colors. In sun light black hair looks silver blue. Other names given to black hair are jet black and raven black. Sometimes range of skin colors and eye colors are also associated with black hair. Mostly people with black hair have olive complexion or dark skin. And their eye color can both be light and dark.

Rather than people of Europe, majority of humans have black hair. Parts of Africa, Asia, and the pre Columbian America have greatest number of people with this hair color. Some Irish people have these traits and are known as the Black Irish. India, Afghanistan and Iran are the three countries which are known for their natives with black hair color. Black hair is hardly seen in the Baltic littoral because that is the place where blondism truly originated. Black hair has a variety of textures. Straight hair is common in Europeans, Asians and Native Americans whereas curly wavy hair is common among racialized groups.

There are many hair care tips which can prove really useful for those people with black hair. Firstly and most importantly one need to have a healthy lifestyle. Doing each activity on time is really important. A proper diet, eight hours sleep, getting up early in the morning are some of the basic necessities. Massaging scalp with oil on regular basis is also very important. Black hair is very dry so there is no need of daily shampooing because this will take away all the natural oils from hair and this will further ruin the hair. If you get engaged in such activities which causes sweat then surely rinse your hair with water and use shampoo only when necessary. If you feel like using a shampoo then go for a mild one with low pH level and do it once in three days. 2 in 1 shampoos should definitely not be used because this kind of shampoo is not meant to be used by those people having black hair. Leave in conditioners are also very good for dry hair. Once in a while deep conditioning treatment can also do wonders.

After washing your hair, do not rub it hard with towel because it will tangle your hair. For washing black hair do not use hot water, it will irritate your scalp. Using oil after shampooing is very important. It will make it easy for you to comb hair without pain. Use comb with wide tooth while combing hair and avoid using round brushes.

Black hair will grow faster and will break less with giving your hair 100 stroke per day. Black hair can be sometimes difficult to manage but not if you follow the above mentioned tips.

Finding the Right Biotin Hair Product for You

Posted by Kenny On February - 13 - 2011

Over the past decade studies into the formation of hair and scientific breakthroughs have revealed the absolute necessity of biotin, which is also known as vitamin b7, in the hair creation process. Biotin for hair growth has proven to be a great way to treat a variety of issues such as baldness in it’s many forms and thinning of hair, biotin can even help repair damaged hair from treatments such as keratin hair straightening. This treatment can also be combined with other hair growth treatments for much better and quicker results. Biotin is an essential vitamin for the reproduction and creation of hair cells and without biotin, the body cannot produce hair as has been shown in lab mice. The average human is heavily deficient in this hair creation molecule and supplementation should be an integral part of everyone’s diet if they want to produce hair at optimum levels.

Depending on your needs with your specific condition, whether it be male pattern baldness or if you just want to have a thicker head of hair your suggested dose of biotin for optimal hair results will be between 2500 micrograms to 10000 micrograms a day, this will ensure that your body is get optimal amounts of this chemical for optimum hair growth. Supplementation with a multivitamin and eating a high protein diet can also work wonders when combined with biotin as protein and secondary b vitamins are also necessary for the production of hair, however they are much easier to aquire in a diet than biotin.

When search for the optimal supplement make sure that you don’t fall for the biotin hair growth scam shampoos and soaps. While these products may have slight effects, they will not do anything near what an oral supplement can do. The reason for this is that biotin is fairly impermeable through a cell membrane and this means only damaged hair can get biotin, making new hair growth with biotin less effective. Good luck with your hair growth!

Lice:The Hair Spoiler!

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On February - 5 - 2011

Lice are small and parasitic insects which are brownish or grey in color. They are found in the hair on the head and the near about regions such as ear, neck and forehead. Lice have a life cycle of only 30 days and therefore it has a rapid reproductive cycle. They reach maturity quite soon and lay eggs that rapidly hatch in very next week of their own birth. They lay eggs on hair shafts just above the skin surface. They cause itching, irritation and redness on scalp and can also cause skin infections.

Lice are mostly found in small children as they come in close contacts with many other children who may have lice in their own heads. Sharing pillow and caps can also transmit lice from one person to another. To get free from lice the below mentioned home remedies will prove useful.

The foremost remedy is lemon juice which is the most effective one. By applying an equal mixture of lemon juice and garlic paste on the scalp one can get rid of the lice. This mixture should be allowed to dry for 30 minutes. Then hair can be washed with cold water rinsing off all the dust and dirt. Olive oil also kills lice and that too very efficiently. Apply olive oil to your hair in a large amount and leave it overnight. In the morning comb your hair with a lice comb. You will see lice slipping out of your hair easily.

This procedure has to be repeated once in a week for 2 months. Egg yolk will also help you in solving lice problem. A mixture should be prepared with the help of egg yolks of two eggs. Three tablespoon of vinegar and lemon juice of one lemon and then apply it on the scalp. Leave it for 20 to 30 minutes. Wash it with warm water and get beneficial results. Another solution is almond. Soak 10 almonds in water and leave it overnight. Then make a paste using those almonds and adding some lemon juice to it. Leave this mixture on your scalp for 2 hours and then wash it with cold water.

This may sound a little weird but even alcohol will help you in getting rid of this problem. Just by massaging alcohol on your hair and keeping it for half an hour will kill lice. Do it weekly and it will also make hair smooth and silky? Neem or Margosa leaves is the most herbal and oldest way of eradicating lice from hair. Make a paste, apply it and allow it to dry. Similarly Basal leaves or Tulsi can be used the same way. Repeat this procedure for two times in a week. An herbal shampoo and Ayurvedic herbs can also be used. If you have long hair make sure you take proper care of it. Do not keep hair dirty and wash it on regular intervals. This would be the most essential step for keeping hair away from lice.

Diet For Hair Quality

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On February - 5 - 2011

There are some misconceptions about hair and hair care. These misconceptions often mislead and misguide all your efforts to nourish your hair in the exact opposite direction. Once you know the truth behind it, the task of Hair care becomes easier and more convenient.

The most popular misconception regarding hair is that it is alive, and, hence, its condition can be altered 'permanently' using some innovative and technologically advanced chemical potion, conditioner or shampoo. As a fact, hair is only living at its root or base i.e. below the epidermis (scalp). The complete length of hair above your scalp is made up of dead cells only and the only biological process that can take place here is imbibition, which is a temporary process. Just like your nail tip hair also is a completely dead tissue. This fact brings to light some important conclusion about how to maintain healthier, stronger and shiny locks by focusing on the area that will actually yield to any effort, the roots or the base.

Preventative maintenance should be the main concern for all those who desire better hair quality. We can prevent hair from losing its shine and strength more efficiently than improve its texture once it is lost. To nourish the base or the roots of the hair is essential to ensure good quality and texture. This can be achieved by maintaining healthy scalp conditions which in turn can be attained by a balanced protein rich diet. It should be noted that hair is made up of 100 percent keratin (a protein), in its basic form. Healthy hair germinates in a healthy scalp and scalp can be nourished by a protein rich diet.  Poultry, meat, egg and dairy products are the richest source of amino acids and proteins. For people who are vegetarians or vegans nuts, pulses, beans and milk can serve as good alternative sources of protein. Protein shakes and high protein low carbohydrate diet has rapidly gained popularly in this health conscious age. With the growing popularity of protein rich diet, the number of frizzy hair and split end complains are already decreasing.

Many people might complain of hair issues despite of taking a proper protein diet. Well, just taking in protein is not enough. Though the protein enters your body and blood it still needs to be stimulated and supplied to the areas that require it. Like we need to exercise and work specific muscles to pump the protein rich blood in those parts to initiate muscle growth and build them stronger, similarly your scalp also needs to be stimulated to increase the flow of protein rich blood. This can be achieved quite easily by massaging your scalp regularly, advisably once every day. This will ensure the protein rich blood to nourish the scalp and the hair roots. Carefully, apply pressure and massage your scalp, moving your fingertips in circular motion. It is advised not to use your fingernail while massaging, it can cause abrasion and infection on your scalp.

The Myth of Shampoo and Daily Conditioning

Posted by saurabh.sahni280691 On February - 5 - 2011

This is an important fact that hair is made up of dead cells and hence it is entirely dead. The only part of hair that is alive is the root or the base. Many people are unaware of this fact but this is important to consider if you want your efforts to produce results. Any remedy or solution that we might seek for this dead part of hair is essentially temporary. Any chemical product you might use on this part of hair will only bring about a temporary change. This is a general observation that any new product you might use shows good results on initial applications but after a longer period of usage its credibility decreases and its result is however helpful a product might appear initially, its results are always temporary and after long usage its credibility declines and the results last only for hours.

It is important to use any effective product following a simple strategy. Any hair care product that positively controls your frizzies and split ends must be used cyclically and periodically but not regularly to ensure it remains effective for a longer period. Some products might have a long lasting effect and hence are not required to be used frequently while others have to be used daily for complex solutions like split ends etc. And whatever chemical product one might use, the ‘deadness’ of hair makes it impossible to work forever.

There is a popular belief that shampoo alone is sufficient to provide overall nourishment to hair. However, a shampoo is made to perform and can perform only one task, even though it might be made of a million expensive ingredients and that task is cleaning. One cannot and should not expect a shampoo to perform cleaning as well as conditioning however exotic it might be. A shampoo can only cleanse the hair of sweat, dust, sebum and other environmental toxins.

Sebum is natural oil secreted from the pores of our scalp. It is nutrient rich and nourishes the roots and hair. Sebum has a softening and strengthening effect. But with regular shampooing the sebum gets washed away and never gets accumulated sufficiently. It hardly reaches the mid length of your hair. Thus the other half is always undernourished and exposed to damages. The chemicals and heat of styling techniques and equipment such as colouring, curling and straightening, etc., further harm this part.

The solution to this problem is shampooing only the upper half length (root to middle shaft) of your hair daily. Preferably apply shampoo only two to three inches from the roots. Rinsing is sufficient to clean the length the other half of the hair (mid-shaft to end).

The technique for daily conditioning is reverse to the concept of shampooing. Considering the afore mentioned fact that throughout the day the upper 3-4 inches of hair will be nourished by the sebum, applying conditioner on this part will make your hair heavier, laden and often unmanageable.
